About
Adegoriola Abejoye, popularly known as Psalmmy, is the former 40th President of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Students' Union (2024/2025). Currently serving as the Chairman of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), CMC Ondo State, he is a dedicated advocate for student welfare and quality education (SDG 4). His journey reflects a commitment to serving as an effective intermediary between the student body and university management.
What Shaped Them
- Leadership Inspiration: His path was defined by observing effective leadership during his early years on campus. Seeing the 'number one student' during orientation sparked a vision to lead, which he pursued through dedicated service as an advocate for academic improvement.
- The Price of Power: Serving as president required immense sacrifice, including the intentional decision to trade a first-class degree for the broader, real-world experience of student governance. He highlights the 'madness' or audacity required to negotiate with university management while managing the diverse expectations of over 25,000 students.
- Facing Reality: Transitioning from an initial course in Engineering to Mathematical Sciences, he learned early on that academic setbacks do not define one's potential, as they instead opened doors to political and social influence.
Lessons From Their Journey
Take Charge: Leadership is not about being controlled; it is about taking advice while maintaining the autonomy to make final, bold decisions for the betterment of the student body.
Value Networks over Grades: While academic excellence is admirable, Psalmmy emphasizes that building a vast, nationwide network and mastering public speaking are equally critical assets gained through extracurricular leadership.
Know Your Rights: He advocates for students to be well-versed in their handbook and rights, noting that many conflicts can be resolved without needing to escalate issues to the presidential level.
Advice To Younger Students
Be yourself. Your DNA is unique, even if cultures and traditions change. Find your trajectory, be clear with your goals, and do not be distracted. Whatever you can conceive, you can achieve—but you must be willing to take the steps necessary to turn that vision into reality.
Memorable Quote
"Your closeness to a king should not make you forget the crown on his head."
Why We Remember Them
Psalmmy's leadership legacy at FUTA is marked by his 'talk and do' reputation, exemplified by his prompt town hall meetings and commitment to distributing resources like shop rents back into student scholarships. He remains a powerful voice for institutional accountability and student empowerment.
